NTG Research

The NTG Skills gaps & future skills need research output is a comprehensive pack of insights created by the Next Tourism Generation Alliance which follows the NTG Tourism Skills Assessment Methodology, a research method built around three key skills sets that can be used by industry and education to form the basis for the next step in skills development for the European Tourism Sector.

Desk research

Our primary desk research demonstrates the most important trends, issues and challenges in digital and sustainability skills development for the tourism and hospitality sector and reviews issues in partner countries involved in the NTG project (Bulgaria, Germany, UK, Spain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands). This document reveals the essential nature of skills development as the driving force behind accurate and effective responding to skills gaps and future skills needs.

Development of digital, green and social skills can significantly improve the tourism sector. This report highlights that technological innovations will continue to change jobs in tourism and tourist experiences which has created a growing need for data analysts, programmers and AI specialists. More digitally savvy tourists are entering the travel market allowing companies to stay permanently connected with their customers and build close relationships and loyalty. Conversely, skills to reduce the impact of ‘overtourism’ are also needed in destinations. Hyper-connected societies, markets, and industries will be adapting continuously to disruptions, many of which are unknown at this moment in time.

This report will highlight the importance of

  • Self-learning capacities
  • Digital fluency
  • Cognitive skills (such as problem-solving, entrepreneurship, creativity)
  • Socio-emotional skills (communicative, collaborative) and multicultural dexterity

The desk research report also involved a thorough examination of company reports, past project reports, academic journals, industry trade journals, government strategies and policy documents, books and websites to execute a thorough evaluation of existing knowledge of issues and challenges related to digital and sustainability skills gaps, company training needs and digital and sustainability training delivery.

In-depth research per country

From January-March 2019, a European survey was conducted in the 8 partner countries of the NTG Project (Spain, UK, Hungary, Netherlands, Italy, Bulgaria, Germany, Ireland). Subsequently, an analysis of the survey, exploring the skills gaps per skills sets type, was finished in May 2019. The total sample of the survey on a European level was 1404.

In the Country Survey Report you will find:

  • Trends and findings on how the five tourism sectors are responding to the skill sets.
  • Highs, lows, current and future level of proficiency in digital, environmental, social and soft skills sets.
  • How businesses are accessing training, with an evaluation as to why businesses respond as they have and what may be contributing factors.
  • The gaps in the current and future level of proficiency in environmental, social and digital levels of proficiency across the 5 sectors.

The Next Tourism Generation Alliance (NTG) also interviewed over 200 tourism directors, head of departments and entrepreneurs to acquire in-depth understanding and insights into the future of digital, green and social skills from the perspective of people working in the tourism industry within eight different European countries.
